The reading
I remember the day vividly, the moment when I decided to bend the rules for Sarah, a colleague who had always been the epitome of dedication. She had worked tirelessly on a project, only to be sidelined due to an arbitrary deadline. I, in my capacity as her manager, had the authority to make an exception. I did. I extended the deadline by a week, believing she deserved it. At the time, it felt like the right decision, a small act of justice in an often unjust world.
Yet, as I reflect on that choice now, I find myself questioning its ethicality. The rules were in place for a reason, to ensure fairness and consistency across the board. By making an exception for Sarah, did I inadvertently undermine the integrity of the system? It's a troubling thought, one that gnaws at me as I consider the potential consequences of my actions.
Of course, there are those who would argue that rules are meant to be flexible, that they should bend when faced with exceptional circumstances. Sarah's situation was indeed unique, and her dedication was unquestionable. However, this raises a critical question: if I bend the rules for one, where do I draw the line? What stops me from doing it again, and again, until the rules become meaningless?
The strongest counterargument is that compassion should guide our decisions, that human elements must sometimes outweigh rigid structures. But even compassion has its limits. If every decision is subject to personal interpretation, we risk descending into chaos, where favoritism and bias overshadow merit and equity.
In retrospect, I can't say I regret helping Sarah. Her gratitude was genuine, and the project benefited from her extended input. Yet, I am acutely aware that my decision was not without flaws. Perhaps the lesson here is not about the righteousness of bending rules but about the awareness of its implications—an awareness that should guide future decisions more prudently.
