In the dimly lit conference room of a midtown Manhattan skyscraper, I found myself ensnared in a meeting that seemed destined to accomplish nothing. The agenda was ambitious, promising resolutions on budget allocations, strategic initiatives, and personnel changes. Yet, as the hours ticked by, it became apparent that the only decision being made was to defer decisions. 'We'll need more data,' said Karen, the head of finance, her voice a blend of authority and evasion. And so, the meeting concluded with the same unresolved issues it began with.
This phenomenon, the meeting where nothing is decided, is not unique to our office. It is a hallmark of many institutions, where the appearance of deliberation often trumps the act of decision-making. The distinction, which is why it frustrates so many, lies in the art of maintaining the illusion of progress. Institutions, by their nature, are risk-averse, preferring the safety of inaction over the potential fallout of a bold decision.
Granted, there are times when delay is genuine prudence. Take, for example, the case of the pharmaceutical company that postponed the launch of a new drug until further safety testing was complete. Here, the decision to wait was not avoidance but a necessary caution. However, these instances are exceptions rather than the rule, and they should not obfuscate the more common pattern of institutional inertia.
Critics might argue that such meetings are necessary to build consensus, a critical component in any large organization. They have a point. Consensus can foster unity and ensure that all voices are heard. Yet, when consensus becomes an excuse for perpetual postponement, it ceases to be a strength and becomes a liability.
